Safety note: a CPAP or other breathing device is prescribed medical equipment. This page covers the power side only; it is not medical advice. Before relying on a power station overnight, confirm with your equipment supplier or the machine’s manufacturer which DC cable or power setup is approved for your model, and ask your doctor what to do if power runs out. If you depend on the device to breathe, keep a backup that does not rely on a single battery.

A 12-hour outage tests your patience. A 48-hour outage tests your budget — because what you choose to keep running determines whether you need a 700 Wh station or a 5,000 Wh one.

This page uses the same assumptions as the power station calculator and how-the-numbers-are-made: AC through an inverter loses 15%, DC/USB loses 10%, LFP gives up 10% of rated capacity.

Who needs what

  • Only lights and phone charging: 700 Wh LFP gets you through 48 hours
  • Add a laptop: 1,500 Wh LFP
  • Add a CPAP (no humidifier): 2,000 Wh LFP
  • Add the full-size refrigerator: 5,000 Wh LFP — the fridge alone accounts for most of this

LED wattage and phone charging are general estimates — they vary by product. The refrigerator figure (50 W average) is a general rule of thumb based on a modern Energy Star–certified full-size refrigerator running its compressor at roughly 150 W for about one third of the time. Older models, a frequently opened door, or a warm room will pull more. The full story — surge watts, eco mode, measured draws — is at full-size refrigerator backup power.

The laptop figure (60 W) is a general rule of thumb for a 15-inch laptop under light use. Check your charger’s label for a precise number.

The 48-hour calculation

Each device’s daily Wh is multiplied by 2 days, then divided by the port efficiency (AC ÷ 0.85, USB/DC ÷ 0.90), then the total is divided by 0.90 (LFP depth of discharge) to get the rated capacity needed.

Scenario E: Everything

Item From battery

CPAP (DC) 533 Wh

Chart: Scenario E: Everything (Wh)

LFP station needed: 4,413 ÷ 0.90 = 4,903 Wh rated → 5,000 Wh station

The margin here is 97 Wh — about 2% of rated capacity. A colder-than-average fridge, an extra device charge, or a cold room reducing battery output can exceed the limit. At this load level, treat 5,000 Wh as the floor and keep the station charged whenever grid power comes back.

Soft candle flames illuminate the darkness, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

The refrigerator changes everything

The fridge accounts for roughly 64% of the total load in Scenario E. That one device is the reason a 2-day outage plan costs $400 or $2,000+.

A cooler with ice handles cold storage for two days at a fraction of the weight and cost. If keeping the fridge running is a hard requirement, the surge watt and eco-mode details that affect whether your station can handle it are at full-size refrigerator backup power.

Cold weather note

A station left in a cold garage or in a house that drops below 50 °F during the outage delivers less than its rated capacity. How much less, and why it matters for multi-day planning, is at power station cold weather capacity.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work for NMC batteries?

NMC uses 80% depth of discharge instead of 90%. Divide each “from battery” total by 0.80 instead of 0.90. For Scenario B: 1,056 ÷ 0.80 = 1,320 Wh rated, so a 1,500 Wh NMC station still fits.

What if the outage runs past 48 hours?

Add the same daily amounts for each extra day. The refrigerator adds roughly 1,412 Wh per additional day (1,200 Wh ÷ 0.85). For three days, recalculate with a × 3 multiplier.

What about the furnace?

A gas furnace runs on gas — but the blower, igniter, and controls need a small amount of electricity. That calculation is in gas furnace backup power.

Can I use two smaller stations instead of one 5,000 Wh?

Yes, with a tradeoff. Two 2,500 Wh stations give you the same total capacity, and some setups allow running one while the other charges. The wiring and timing are manual, though — check whether your fridge can tolerate a brief gap between power sources.

Worth having before the next outage

Measure your fridge first. The 50 W average in the table is a general estimate. A plug-in watt meter gives you the real number in a few minutes — which tells you whether Scenario D is right or whether you need more. Search for plug-in watt meters →

LED lighting. Three 10 W LED bulbs draw 30 W total. Three equivalent incandescent bulbs draw 180 W — six times as much for the same light. If your bulbs are not already LED, that is a cheap way to cut the lights row in this table by about 83%. Search for LED bulbs →
